| UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas: A Primer |
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (UT Southwestern) has attained international prominence in its short history, but its success has not been achieved without partnerships. Founded by Southwestern Medical Foundation 65 years ago and receiving ongoing support from the organization, the Medical Center enjoys a success that is also attributed to its faculty, which treats patients, pursues discoveries and trains students in several of America’s finest hospitals.
Without UT Southwestern, its affiliated hospitals might not exist. Without the hospitals, UT Southwestern could not continue to flourish.
The core of the medical complex is UT Southwestern, which includes three degree-granting institutions: Southwestern Medical School, Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Southwestern Allied Health Sciences School.
Closely aligned with UT Southwestern is University Medical Center Inc., the holding company for Zale Lipshy Building and St. Paul Building , both on the Southwestern Medical Center campus. Also integrally connected are on-campus affiliates Parkland Health & Hospital System and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Off-campus primary hospital affiliates include the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
Southwestern Medical Foundation performs its own crucial role, providing resources, resolve and leadership where needed. The Foundation established Southwestern Medical College in 1943, turned it over to The University of Texas System in1949 and has been a generous and loyal partner to this day.
“I compare the medical center to a wheel,” said W. Plack Carr Jr., president of Southwestern Medical Foundation. “The hub is the medical school, where you have the students, the teaching and research, and it radiates along the spokes: Children’s, Zale Lipshy, St. Paul, Parkland, Scottish Rite and the VA Hospital. These institutions are vitally important and make monumental contributions to our community — and it is the school that holds them all together.”
