Getting Started:
There are many ways that you can help support the Foundation with your resources. But the first question you’ll need to ask yourself is,“How do I want to help?” Listed below are some questions to help you determine what options are right for you.
1. Do you want to give an unrestricted gift that will allow the Foundation’s trustees to use your gift where it is most needed or do you want to restrict your gift to a specific area of interest?
2. Do you want the full amount of your gift to be spent over a short period of time to meet an immediate need or do you want it placed in an endowment where only the income generated through investments may be used to support your selected area of interest?
3. Do you want to make your gift all at one time or make a pledge that can be paid over a period of time?
4. Do you want to make your gift during your lifetime, at your death or some combination of both?
5. What type of asset would you like to give?
6. What form of payment would you like to use to make your gift? Please use the list shown on the left to review your options and determine which option makes the most sense for you.
Again, thank you for your interest in supporting Southwestern Medical Foundation.

In-Kind Gifts
In-kind gifts are donations other than cash, real estate or securities. For example, valuable works of art, furniture, collections and all forms of tangible personal property will usually be subject to estate taxes. By making gifts of these items in your lifetime, you simplify your estate planning, reduce your taxable estate and receive a tax deduction in the year of the gift. For a gift of tangible personal property, you may take a charitable deduction of the property's full fair-market value, provided the use of the property is related to Southwestern Medical Foundation's tax-exempt functions. If the property cannot be used in one of our functions, the tax deduction is the lesser of the property's original cost or its fair market value. Much of the beauty that enhances the UT Southwestern campus has come through gifts of this kind.
To discuss the possibility of making an in-kind gift, please call the Foundation during normal business hours (9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. CST) at 214-351-6143.
Matching Gifts:
Many employers offer their employees the opportunity to have their charitable contributions matched by their company. Please check with your employer to determine if your gift to Southwestern Medical Foundation is eligible for a matching gift. If so, please consider enclosing a completed matching gift form along with your gift to double the impact of your gift.
Memorial/Honorary Gifts:
Memorial or honorary gifts are a considerate way to pay tribute to a special individual. Acknowledgement of your gift is sent to you as well as to the individual being honored or to the appropriate family member so they can be made aware of your gift. To make your gift online via credit card, please click on the gift by credit card form above and follow the instructions.
If you prefer to send a check, please provide the name and address of the person you want to honor or memorialize. Please mail the completed form and your check made payable to “Southwestern Medical Foundation” to:

Real Estate:
Your residence, farm, commercial building or other parcel of land all can make valuable gifts to Southwestern Medical Foundation. You may even contribute your residence, live in it for the rest of your life and receive an income tax deduction.
Real estate, like appreciated stocks, bonds, mutual funds and personal property, may be contributed and no capital gains tax will be paid; you receive an income tax deduction in the amount of the current market value of the real estate; and you eliminate estate taxes on the appreciated real estate.
To discuss the possibility of making a gift of real estate, please call the Foundation during normal business hours (9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. CST) at 214-351-6143.
Securities:
You may choose to give or pledge securities, including appreciated stock, rather than cash, to Southwestern Medical Foundation. If you itemize deductions, you may deduct the full market value of your gift if you have owned the securities for more than 12 months. By using the securities for a gift rather than selling them, you avoid capital gains taxes on any appreciation, and you can deduct the market value of the securities for federal tax purposes.
If you own stock in a closely held corporation, a gift of that stock to Southwestern Medical Foundation may bring you substantial tax benefits. A number of strategies may be used to fit your circumstances and achieve the maximum tax benefits.
To make a gift or pledge using stocks, bonds or other securities, including closely held stock, please call the Foundation during normal business hours (8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. CST) at 214-351-6143.
You should consult with your legal and tax advisors about the applicability of the above information to your situation.
